Where would you hide a poisonous snake in your home?

Of course, most of us would not hide a snake anywhere in our home.

But maybe you're hiding something worse than a snake in your home.

“Do not gaze at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly! In the end it bites like a snake and poisons like a viper.”
(Proverbs 23:31-32, NIV)

Alcohol is worse than a poisonous snake because it affects not only the user, but whole families, entire communities and DUI's are a $30 Billion Industry each year in our country.

Is a poisonous snake safe under the seat of the truck? What if the kids are looking for something, the "snake" finds them and bites them?

How about keeping a rattlesnake in the back of the refrigerator? What if your family is searching for food, push the six-pack snake aside, and end up getting poisoned in the process?

Hear the Word of God:

Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise.” (Proverbs 20:1, NIV)

Who has anguish? Who has sorrow? Who is always fighting? Who is always complaining? Who has unnecessary bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? It is the one who spends long hours in the taverns, trying out new drinks. Don’t gaze at the wine, seeing how red it is, how it sparkles in the cup, how smoothly it goes down. For in the end it bites like a poisonous snake; it stings like a viper. You will see hallucinations, and you will say crazy things. You will stagger like a sailor tossed at sea, clinging to a swaying mast. And you will say, “They hit me, but I didn’t feel it. I didn’t even know it when they beat me up. When will I wake up so I can look for another drink?”” (Proverbs 23:29-35, NLT)

Can I get a witness?

Yes, we are free in Christ to drink alcohol in moderation. Jesus turned the water into wine, and according to Luke 7:31-33 he even came "eating and drinking." The Word of God says,

“I have the right to do anything,” you say - but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything” - but not everything is constructive. No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.” (1 Corinthians 10:23-24, NIV)

Drinking alcohol is never condemned in and of itself in Scripture (wine is a symbol of joy in the Old Testament), but drunkenness is.

Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit,” (Ephesians 5:18, NLT)

Keep in mind if you do drink that you are playing with a poisonous snake, and it just might kill you and those you love in the end.

If you have been bitten by the snake in the past, as I have, remind yourself that when we repent God is our great healer and restorer.

The greater sin is not learning wisdom from our previous mistakes and sins.

For no one is abandoned by the Lord forever. Though he brings grief, he also shows compassion because of the greatness of his unfailing love. For he does not enjoy hurting people or causing them sorrow.” (Lamentations 3:31-33, NLT)
