What does it do to you if you know you will someday see God face-to-face?

We know what it did to a man named Simeon.

Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.” (Luke 2:25, ESV)

My dear friend and roommate in college and seminary, Jon Mahar, had a long-distance relationship with a person through correspondence. He had never seen her in person until they met when we went to Japan for a missions trip in 1986. They have been married for over 30 years now and still serve the Lord as missionaries in Japan.

He often shared this verse prior to their in-person meeting,

You love him even though you have never seen him. Though you do not see him now, you trust him; and you rejoice with a glorious, inexpressible joy.
(1 Peter 1:8, NLT)

I bet Simeon would have said the same. Jon had seen a photograph of his now wife, but Simeon had not seen a photo of who he was looking for - except in the pages of the Old Testament. Studying each passing face. Staring into the eyes of strangers. He’s looking for someone.

He was waiting forwardly. Patiently vigilant. Calmly expectant. Eyes open. Arms extended. Searching the crowd for the right face, and hoping the face appears today.

Haven’t we, like Simeon been told of the coming Christ? Aren’t we, like Simeon, heirs of a promise? Are we not prompted by the same Spirit? Are we not longing to see the same face? Simeon reminds us to ‘wait forwardly.’ Patiently vigilant. But not so patient that we lose our vigilance. Nor so vigilant that we lose our patience. One look into the face of Jesus, and Simeon knew it was time to go home. And one look into the face of our Savior, and we will know that we are finally home.

Read this verse out loud as your confession of faith:

You love him even though you have never seen him. Though you do not see him now, you trust him; and you rejoice with a glorious, inexpressible joy.
(1 Peter 1:8, NLT)
