Jesus is Knocking - Will You Answer?

A young mother expressed her fear that Christ will return and she does not want him to return - yet. Here is her heart-felt concern (used with permission):

"Hi Pastor Beau,

Really enjoy getting these emails! You asked for topics regarding the end times. I don’t necessarily have a specific topic but a fear. I think I’ve relayed this to you before.

It’s a very difficult issue I struggle with and have struggled with it for years.

As a Christian we are taught that we should be anxious and eager for the second coming, I struggle with this desire. Yes of course I know I’m going to heaven and yes I too want to be in heaven with Jesus but I don’t want him to come soon, I don’t want to be without my kids, I want to grow older and experience their lives with them. I really enjoy the life God has given me. My children and husband are so important to me and I cannot imagine heaven being as wonderful as what I have here. I love the life I have, the people and things in it. I feel as though even saying this is wrong but it’s truly what I feel and it’s on my mind a lot.

How can I as a Christian not be anxious for God to return?

Sadly I have a fear of God returning and I know it shouldn’t be that way. I pray about it often and find myself so conflicted to the point of tears and fear."

Of course, I have known her and her family for many years.

So, if I were sitting down with her family and her, I would answer in "big picture" terms, and then make it personal to their specific situation. It will take more than one email to answer as we go from the macro to the micro.

The best way to overcome a fear of the end of days and Jesus' return is to be spiritually prepared for it - and make sure that your family is ready for it.

First and foremost, you must have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ in order to have eternal life.

“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16, NLT)

Only through turning from sin and accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior can you receive forgiveness of sin and have eternity with God. If God is your Father, there’s really nothing to worry about.

“So don’t be afraid, little flock. For it gives your Father great happiness to give you the Kingdom.” (Luke 12:32, NLT)

He will give you the eternal kingdom - which is far better than earth - to your precious family, too, if they know Him.

There are many misconceptions about heaven. We won't be riding on a cloud playing a harp. It won't be an eternal church service (but with better preachers, like Moses, or Paul, or Abraham).

Jesus says that we will have responsibilities in heaven (Matthew 25:14-30). And that may include being with our children and spouse and involving them in our heavenly work.

The first priority then is for us to tell our family, friends, and everyone we know and care about to get ready for Jesus' return by committing their lives to Him!
