Now that you know these things, God will bless you for doing them.
(John 13:17, NLT)

Knowing the truth does not mean that you're doing it!

How many people do you know should be exercising, eating better, but aren't doing it? I'm talking about everyone except you, of course ;-).

As an educator for most of my life, I have been concerned that we are deluded into thinking that because we KNOW what we should do that WE ARE DOING IT!

Without going into the Platonic reasons why this is happening philosophically, I think it is important for us to think about whether or not we are DOING what we KNOW to do.

If you know that you should be forgiving but aren't forgiving - are you pointing your finger at others who aren't obeying the Word of God?

If you know that you should trust God with your finances - but aren't giving sacrificially and consistently, how can you judge others?

If you think that I am making this up, hear the Word of God:

You may think you can condemn such people, but you are just as bad, and you have no excuse! When you say they are wicked and should be punished, you are condemning yourself, for you who judge others do these very same things. And we know that God, in his justice, will punish anyone who does such things. Since you judge others for doing these things, why do you think you can avoid God’s judgment when you do the same things? Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin? But because you are stubborn and refuse to turn from your sin, you are storing up terrible punishment for yourself. For a day of anger is coming, when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed. He will judge everyone according to what they have done. He will give eternal life to those who keep on doing good, seeking after the glory and honor and immortality that God offers. But he will pour out his anger and wrath on those who live for themselves, who refuse to obey the truth and instead live lives of wickedness. There will be trouble and calamity for everyone who keeps on doing what is evil - for the Jew first and also for the Gentile. But there will be glory and honor and peace from God for all who do good - for the Jew first and also for the Gentile. For God does not show favoritism.” (Romans 2:1-11, NLT)

Solomon, without a doubt, was the wisest man who ever lived (according to God's Word). He KNEW what he should do, but he was not doing it! He was the classic bumper sticker who would say, "Do as I say, not as I do!"

I grew up in North Carolina with a family of smokers, chewers, alcoholics, drug addicts, etc. When I was younger, I heard constantly, "Don't smoke. It's bad for you."

But I heard this from every person who had tobacco hanging out of their mouth in some form or another.

SERIOUSLY?
WHO EVER DOES THAT IN THE HISTORY OF HUMANITY?

I watched my uncle one time after a dusting of snow in the mountains of North Carolina walk toward the little shed that kept his moonshine still. His young son was walking in his steps as he walked in the snow.

I yelled, "Uncle _______! Look! Your son is following in your steps!"

He turned to my cousin and scolded him, "Get back in the house! Stop following me!"

He said, "Daddy, look! I can walk in your footsteps!" And he was stepping as long as his little legs would allow him to walk in the same steps as his father left in the snow.

And he did follow my Uncle's steps.

My cousin (my uncle's son) died of alcohol poisoning at 32.

This demonstrates vividly Solomon's Paradox:  Knowing the truth does not mean that you are doing it.

Who is following you?

Are you worthy of being followed?

Now that you know these things, God will bless you for doing them.
(John 13:17, NLT)

Are you living the Solomon Paradox - you know what to do but aren't doing it?

  • WHAT WILL YOU DO (NOT KNOW) DIFFERENTLY???
