I challenged us about our attitudes of condemnation toward others, especially using the Bible as a pitchfork to throw at others instead of a rake to pull applications to ourselves.

It is very easy - especially in our region - for people to be harsh, critical and judgmental toward others. In fact, I told my classes one day that I have been surprised at how someone has said something to someone's cousin twelve years ago and the whole family is still holding a grudge! (Can I get a witness?)

God looks at the video of our lives, not the snapshots of failure. He is “at work within you, both to will and to do of His good pleasure.” (Philippians 2:13)

In fact, God can use our failures as examples to others of His matchless grace.

God will get the glory from every person’s life, one way or another. You can be used as an example to follow or a model to avoid. Both are beneficial to others, but for very different reasons.

Just to remind you of who the authors of the Bible really were:

Would you ever read a book written by an adulterer, who used and manipulated women long before the “MeToo” Movement began?

He even killed one lover's husband!

His son, conceived out of wedlock, even wrote a few books that became bestsellers. One of his books describes his sexual encounters in blushing detail.

Would you buy a book written by a serial murderer, who openly confessed he did it? His murders would surpass the notorious Ted Bundy.

Would you waste one penny on reading something from the life of a drunk and his homosexual tendencies?

Would you read the memoir of a prostitute who describes - well, you know.

Every person I just mentioned above not only was forgiven but made it into God’s Hall of Fame - otherwise known as the “Hall of Faith” in Hebrews 11. Each one was a shining example of God at work in their lives when they repented and allowed Him to use them after their failure!

Would you ever read a book written by an adulterer, who used and manipulated women long before the “MeToo” Movement began, who also murdered his lover's husband to hid his affair? (David, who wrote most of the Psalms)

His son, Solomon who was conceived through adultery (2 Samuel 11), even wrote a few books that became bestsellers (Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Solomon) - one even describes his sexual encounters in blushing detail. (Song of Solomon in the original Hebrew is very graphic!)

Would you enjoy a book written by a serial murderer, who openly confessed he did it? His murders would surpass the notorious Ted Bundy. (Apostle Paul, who wrote almost half of the New Testament).

How about reading something from the life of a drunk, and his homosexual encounter? (Noah - something happened with his son Ham that is not explained - Genesis 9).

What about a prostitute who describes – well, you know. (Rahab)

Remember, dear friend, when you point your finger at someone else, you have three pointing back at yourself!

“Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged.
And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.
” (Matthew 7:1-5, NLT)

  • What are you doing that you or people around you don’t condemn others?
