Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12)

Our God gives us a great lesson in reality through this verse. We are told to number our days so that that we may live skillfully, with wisdom.

So, I did the math - to number my days.

The average lifespan of a male in North America is 76. For a woman, it's 81.

I'm 57 right now, so that means I only have 19 years or 6,935 days left (if the Lord does not return and I live an average lifespan).

But wait. It's almost September. So subtract 240 days for eight months of this year from that number and I only have 6,695 days left on this planet in my "earth suit" before I put on my "immortal suit." (1 Corinthians 15:51-58)

But wait. My mother died of a heart attack when she was 56 - a year younger than my current age. So there's a history of heart disease in my family which may lessen the number even more.

When the Lord first impressed this on my heart a few years ago, i started taking a marble out of one bowl and putting it in another bowl every Saturday signifying that it is one more week I won't get back. How did I live it for the Lord?

Before you think I'm losing my marbles, may I submit to you that this is a very healthy way to think?

Do I have time to fool around with "the sin that so easily besets us?" (Hebrews 12:1-2). I will see my Lord face to face sooner rather than later and give an account (2 Corinthians 5:9-10).

Who am I trying to take to heaven with me before I meet the Lord?
I don't have time to wait to talk with them. (Mark 16:15)

What good did I do this past week to honor the Lord and help others?
(Ephesians 2:10)

What contributions to the Lord's work am I making with my time, talents and treasures?
We have never seen a hearse with a U-haul, so we know we can't take it with us.
Let's send it on ahead! (2 Corinthians 9:6-15)

Yes, in a few more years I can retire, should the Lord tarry. But I am not going to retire. I am going to re-tread and try to live strong for the Lord until He calls me home. I am thankful for many friends who have modeled this for me over the years (Jack Wyrtzen, Walter and Gail, Paul and Connie, Robert and Loagie, Fred and Dawn, Elsie, etc.).

How about you?

What dream have you suppressed because you are waiting for the right time?
The clock is ticking - GO FOR IT!

What relationship needs reconciling that you keep putting off?
It's too late when we die.

How much of the hurts and pain of the past are you going to carry into your remaining days?

Are you waiting until the last hour to turn from sin and commit your life to the Lord Jesus Christ?
God does not owe any of us a last hour to do that.

"I tell you, now is the time of God's favor, now is the day of salvation."
(2 Corinthians 6:2)

The statistics are alarming: one out of one person dies.

Are you ready for it?

Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12)
