George found himself in a hard spot. He lay in bed staring up at the morning sun reflecting off the ceiling.

What had happened to him between his youth and old age?
How did he end up here?

He tried not to think about the question that had been relentlessly dogging him for a few years now. No matter how much he pushed this question out of his mind, he could not get away from this. It was like an old hound dog that persistently pursued him.

He considered himself to be a good person. He had mellowed out as he grew older. He asked God to forgive him for the times he had taken advantage of people at his Texaco station. He had not wanted to, but he also asked for forgiveness for the times he had bitten his wife’s head off. Sheila was a good woman, but she could nag him to no end.

As much as he didn’t want to, he swung his legs off the side of the bed and placed them on the cold floor. He paused while rubbing his face and asked himself again that question - the one question - that he couldn’t stop thinking about.

Finally, he found himself verbalizing softly out loud,
“How can I know that I am right with God?”

He had tried to put in a few more dollars at the Lutheran Church when he did attend, but it still didn’t seem to help.

“Besides. With my bills, I can use the money more than God,” he thought.

It’s hard to read the label when you feel like you’re inside the bottle.

For George - and for all of us - the answer is found in one simple verse from God’s Word.

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23, NLT)

God’s Word says that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. The price tag connected to our sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. You see, God demonstrated His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Jesus died for us. And if we confess with our mouth Jesus is Lord and believe in our heart that God raised Him from the dead, we will be saved. (please read Romans 3:23, 6:23, 5:8-9 and 10:9-10)
