Is the Coronavirus a part of Bible prophecy?

So many joys await us on the day of Christ’s return!

A day of reunion, a day of rewards, a day of redemption. For Satan, it will be the end of evil. But for God’s children, it will be the beginning of everlasting celebration.

Before that wonderful time, we are told that there will be horrible natural disasters, disease, and widespread control of people's lives. Is the COVID-19 pandemic part of that? Scripture is clear that “there will be plagues in the End Times.”

I looked up and saw a horse whose color was pale green. Its rider was named Death, and his companion was the Grave. These two were given authority over one-fourth of the earth, to kill with the sword and famine and disease and wild animals.” (Revelation 6:8, NLT)

Is COVID-19 one of the plagues mentioned in the Bible? It certainly is a vivid preview of what’s coming.

It’s a wake-up call for people to come to Christ in light of what's barrelling toward us in the near future, which is going to be far worse. It’s a very serious foreshadowing of what could be our reality very soon.

COVID-19 also reveals how interconnected our world is today. One person in China got the disease sometime in the fall and now it's in some 190 countries. It’s a picture of how small our world is today and how things are set up for the world ruler, the Antichrist, who is coming. I see a lot of foreshadows and previews in the Coronavirus, but I don't see this as a fulfillment of a specific prophecy from the Bible.

But, I could be wrong.

Maybe the Egyptians who witnessed the plagues in Egypt thought they were just "natural occurrences" and "foreshadowing of what is to come." But, from God's perspective, each one was a specific judgment on the specific gods of Egypt.

Perhaps that is a truth that has slipped through our understanding of the plaques on Egypt in Exodus 6-15. The Egyptians worshiped frogs - so God filled the land with them until they stank up the place. The Egyptians worshiped the sun, so God made the land turn so dark you could feel it. God was taking on the gods of Egypt on their own turf and destroyed them!

“On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn of both people and animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord.” (Exodus 12:12, NIV)

What about our own "gods" that we have worshiped? Whatever takes the majority of our focus, thoughts, time and finances is our "god."

Have people worshiped the god of sports more than the Lord? Now they're cancelled.

How many young people know more about Lebron James than Jesus the Messiah?

Have people refused to take time to reflect, running hard on a treadmill to get ahead at their job? Now they are forced to be home and, "Be still and know that I am God." (Psalm 46:10)

Have people lacked relational connectedness with their families, friends, aging parents? Now they have the time to finally listen to and learn from one another!

Knowing this, then, how will we live? Should we live in fear of the future? Or should we live joyfully, expectantly, praying the prayer at the end of the New Testament:

He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.” (Revelation 22:20, NIV)

God wants us to trust him: “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust in me …. I will come back and take you to be with me” (John 14:1, 3).

Are you ready for His soon return? COVID-19 is a stark reminder of the fragility and brevity of life - and the fact that we are living in "these last days" (Hebrews 1:2).
