So to pacify the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He ordered Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip, then turned him over to the Roman soldiers to be crucified. The soldiers took Jesus into the courtyard of the governor’s headquarters (called the Praetorium) and called out the entire regiment. They dressed him in a purple robe, and they wove thorn branches into a crown and put it on his head. Then they saluted him and taunted, “Hail! King of the Jews!” And they struck him on the head with a reed stick, spit on him, and dropped to their knees in mock worship.” (Mark 15:15–19, NLT)

A few years ago I was feeling really stuck in my Christian life. The truth about Jesus’ birth, His life, death, burial and resurrection had grown stale to me.

As I prayed about my challenge, the Lord spoke to me about making it PERSONAL! I had forgotten how impacting what Jesus did was and the difference it made in my life and worldview.

So, I did a simple exercise that I have been doing every year since then, and it still helps.

What the Lord led me to do was to read the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ arrest, trial, crucifixion and resurrection and make it personal. Every place I could, I would write “for me” or “on my behalf.”

For example, let’s use the passage above and I’ll show you what I do. I take a red or orange pen and write in my Bible:

So to pacify the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them (on my behalf). He ordered Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip (for me), then turned him over to the Roman soldiers to be crucified (for me). The soldiers took Jesus into the courtyard of the governor’s headquarters (called the Praetorium) and called out the entire regiment (to mock Him for me). They dressed him in a purple robe (for me), and they wove thorn branches into a crown and put it on his head (for me). Then they saluted him and taunted, “Hail! King of the Jews!” (for me God was mocked) And they struck him on the head with a reed stick (for me), spit on him (for me), and dropped to their knees in mock worship (for me).” (Mark 15:15–19, NLT)

If you have found your love for the Lord grow cold, this is one way to remind yourself how much God loves you and desires a personal, close relationship with you!

If you can go through all four Gospels without tears streaming down your face and your heart warmed at what it took for the Lord to have an eternal relationship with you, you may have to examine if your heart has grown hard to the greatest story ever told - or evaluate if you even know Him (2 Corinthians 13:5).
