I walked by my sons’ room as they were playing one day. They were 8, 6 and 4 at the time.
Josiah (the six-year old) jumped out from behind the bed and shouted, “Boo! I’m the Holy Ghost!”
About that time, Ben (8) put his hand on his sister’s head (Abbey) as she was sitting on the bed. He pushed her forehead so that she fell backwards as he shouted, “Be healed!”
I asked what they were doing.
They explained they had been watching preachers on television and they were “playing church.”
I had a good laugh at the time.
However, the more I’ve thought about it over the years, I wonder how many people are “playing church.”
I wonder how often I have “played church” as a Christ-follower, pastor and missionary?
Consider these questions:
- Am I preparing my heart to hear the Word of God by quieting my heart on Saturday night, going to bed at a decent time so that God’s Word finds rich soil (Matthew 13:1-23)?
- When I go to church, am I looking to encourage and meet someone else’s needs instead of thinking only about myself (Romans 12:9-13)?
- Am I praying for the pastor or the person speaking the Word of God today and looking for application for myself (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13)?
- Am I being a responsive church member to my church leadership (Hebrews 13:7, 17)?
- Am I giving generously and consistently to the Lord as an act of worship (2 Corinthians 9:6-11)?
Dear friend, let’s not “play church.”
Lets’ BE GOD’S CHURCH TO NEEDY WORLD!
