Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither - whatever they do prospers.” (Psalm 1:1-3, NIV)

Spending time with God is the first step in becoming best friends with God.

What that means is that you purposefully decide to form the habit of a focused time of reading and meditating on the Word of God. You do it in the morning and in the evening according to these verses.

Remember: we will reap what we sow, and we need this habit of spending time with God!

Personally, I set aside the first half hour of the morning reading, praying and meditating on God's Word. I usually read a chapter (with understanding) and answer two questions primarily.

  1. What is God saying in this passage?
  2. How does God want me to apply these principles to my life?

At night, I read a chapter and listen to God's Word as I'm dozing off. Very rarely do I have bad dreams and my sleep is refreshing. Try it yourself! There are lots of free Bible apps that have audio Bibles.

How much time are you investing in your relationship with God?

Would you prayerfully consider giving God equal time?

For every hour you watch television or listen to the radio, would you give God's Word the equal amount of time?

You have heard me talk about Pastor Walter Holder before. We were having breakfast together one time many years ago. I was flipping through the paper and he was reading his Bible as we waited for our food, casually talking.

I told him, "I wish I knew the Bible as well as you do!"

He said, "Well, you won't get to know it reading the paper. Actually, I feel like I'm reading tomorrow's news when I read the Bible."

I put the paper down, picked up my Bible, and have not put it down!

  • How about you?
