Remember, we are responding to a request from a friend in a former church asking how to become best friends with God. We discussed the first two principles:

  1. Set your heart on being best friends with God because He has set His heart on being best friends with you. (John 15:15)
  2. Becoming Best Friends with God is not just a goal, it’s your right and privilege.
    (John 15:13-14)

Here are three other principles.

  1. My habits create how close I am to God.

Becoming best friends with God is a choice. We shape our habits and then they shape us. You can create the habits of friendship with God in your life.

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.” (Galatians 6:7)

Habits are the result of repeated actions. You are today a summation of your choices up to this point, and repeated thoughts and actions are your habits. You can have bad habits or good habits. Remember: structure breeds confidence and we all like the familiar structures and routines in our lives.

We don’t want to be like the young person who “sowed their wild oats” and then prayed for crop failure!

  1. Becoming best friends with God is to be a lifelong habitual pursuit and not a temporary fix to a fleeting problem.

How many people do you know who “turn to God” only when they’re in trouble, or in an emotional ditch and need to be towed out, or even want to try to use God for their personal gain?

A close family member called me years ago and asked me for the Lottery Numbers.

"Why are you calling me?" I asked. "I don't gamble."

He explained, “I’ve noticed that God answers your prayers, so if you pray and God tells you the Lottery Numbers, I’ll tithe 10% to your church.” This same person called me occasionally just to make certain the rapture had not happened yet to see if he still had time to come to Jesus before it happened.

Yes, you can chuckle out loud because it’s downright funny looking back at it!

“Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” (Galatians 6:7-9, NIV)

  1. Living the habits of being best friends with God are as addicting as bad habits but they’re a whole lot more rewarding.

The habits you will form in becoming Besties with God aren’t negative. Bad habits take some time to develop. You don’t develop them over night. And the same is true with good habits; you don’t develop them overnight.

  • Why not start a new habit of getting your coffee and talking with God before you talk with anyone else for the day?
Or talk with him about your day as you drift off to sleep?
