Recently someone who was in a former church wrote me:
“Pastor Beau,
I’ve been going to church for many years since coming to Christ through your church, but I don't feel like I'm any closer to God. How can I become best friends with God? Can you help me?”
Absolutely! I'd love to help!
For the next few emails, I would like to share with this person (and you) some simple steps to becoming best friends with God.
We need to set the discussion in the proper framework, first. Here are five truths for becoming best friends with God (we will discuss two today and three in the next email):
- Set your heart on being best friends with God because He has set His heart on being best friends with you.
“I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” (John 15:15, NIV)
Think of the magnitude of this verse. The God of the Universe chooses to call you his friend! He owns the cattle on a thousand hills - and He knows when to sell a few and give you the profits! He has all power in heaven and earth - and He is willing to create an earthquake to deliver you if you need it as He did Paul and Silas in Acts 16.
Say out loud, so you hear yourself say it and not just read it, “GOD CHOOSES ME AS HIS BEST FRIEND!” That changes everything! He wants you to BELIEVE IT!
- Becoming Best Friends with God is not just a goal, it’s your right and privilege.
Becoming best friends with God is actually the result of right thinking, right living, right acting. It’s the by-product. If you try to use God for your personal gain you’re going to live a very self-centered, miserable life. And it won’t work.
“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command.” (John 15:13-14, NIV)
- On a scale of 1-10 (1 being low and 10 being highest), how close do you sense you are with God?
Are you best friends, or do you see Him as distant?
