What question did you probably ask most often in the car as a child and which question did you most dread as a parent?

“How much farther?”

A parent would rather play "The Alphabet Game" or "I call that car!" with their kids than have to answer the constant query, "How much farther?"

Sometimes, it’s an impossible question to answer. I mean, one of my children I nicknamed, "Quarter tank _________" because this child had to use the restroom every quarter tank! That added time to every trip!

How do you speak of time and distance to someone who doesn’t understand time and distance? The world of a young child is delightfully free of mile-markers and alarm clocks. You can speak of minutes and miles, but a child has no hooks for those hats.

Sooner rather than later, they ask again. And sooner or later, we say what all parents eventually say, “Just trust me. You enjoy the trip and don’t worry about the details. I’ll make sure we get where we are going just fine.”

And we mean it. Not in a harsh way. We don’t want our kids to sweat the details. So we make a deal with them, “We’ll do the driving. You do the trusting. And relax. Enjoy the journey!”

Sound familiar? It might. Jesus says the same to us.

“Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am. And you know the way to where I am going.” “No, we don’t know, Lord,” Thomas said. “We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?” Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.
(John 14:1–6, NLT)
