One Minute Spirit Espresso: God, How Could You Let This Happen? A Real Life Perspective

28 May, 2019 Paul Brownback

In recent days I have written about a biblical perspective on life’s tragedies. I have described the truth perspective, the limitations perspective, and the responsibility perspective. I plan to share some additional perspectives in future posts.

It is one thing to write about biblical perspectives on tragedy but a whole other matter to deal with it in real life. Larry and Bonnie Boyd, previous students of mine, were confronted by the death of their son eight years ago. On the anniversary of his death, Larry wrote this on his Facebook page.

This day, the anniversary of my son David leaving us, brings this perspective to full clarity. The world’s grief process would have us go through a stage of anger. I chose to reject that one. All that I believe about death and heaven was fully tested. I miss him dearly but I never asked God why. I chose to draw closer to Him. Bonnie and I also drew closer to each other. Today, I still grieve but I have all those pleasant memories of his salvation, service and spiritual fruit before and after he left us. Today I can praise the Lord and say, “I see it Lord, I see your plan. Thank you!”

Two other comments made by Larry in our communication add to Larry and Bonnie’s perspective. He told me, “In a much smaller way, I felt what the Heavenly Father may have felt when He lost His Son for a while.” He also observed, “Yet, we didn’t lose him, we know right where he is.”

Does a biblical perspective on tragedy and grieving work in the real world?
