When God began to awaken a desire in my heart for Him when I was in the fifth grade, I went to a church I passed daily as I walked to school. Almost always I went there by myself for Sunday school and church.

Gattis Perry was the pastor of Oakhurst Baptist Church and he loved the Lord, preached the Word of God, and I was baptized in the church when I was 11. (I spoke with him recently, thanking him for preaching God's Word and accepting neighborhood kids to the church. He is still going strong for the Lord in Raleigh, NC at 82.)

Once a month the church had a "Fellowship Dinner." We were blessed to have several of the older "Grandmotherly-types" who liked when kids came to church by themselves and helped us not feel alone, lonely or out of place. Children were always welcome to have seconds and eat as much of their great cooking as we wanted.

One lady in particular took a liking to me and used to whisper to me toward the end of the meal, "Be sure to keep your fork!"

I loved when she said that, because it meant that for dessert we were having Apple Pie or Chocolate Cake or something good - not Jell-O or stale cookies with red punch.

When I served as a Hospice Chaplain, I shared this story with several people who were near death. I used it as an illustration showing that the best is yet to come, a tasty, rich dessert is coming, Death is a just a door through which we enter into the other side into God's glorious presence, where he has promised:

However, as it is written: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived” -  the things God has prepared for those who love him -” (1 Corinthians 2:9, NIV)

One spicy lady I shared this story with declared,
"You better not bury me with a blasted fork. I want a shovel!"

When she finally did go home to be with the Lord, after speaking at her memorial service and with her family's permission, I slipped a SPORK in her hand before she was buried because it looks more like a shovel.

Now she is enjoying her rich dessert in God's Wonderful Banquet!

Then the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!” And he added, “These are the true words of God.”” (Revelation 19:9, NIV)

Are you ready for your huge Fellowship Dinner and dessert?

He could come for us today.

As my friend, Donald Ferguson, says, "We often hear Life is Short - better enjoy it. How about "Eternity is long. Better prepare for it!"

  • How do you prepare yourself for Eternity?
