Why does God hate prejudice and why should we?

“The LORD our God does not tolerate perverted justice, partiality, or the taking of bribes.” 2 Chronicles 19:7 (NLT)

As a follower of Jesus Christ, we must hate what God hates and love what He loves. God hates prejudice, and here’s why:

Racial prejudice ignores God’s creation.

We all come from the same parents, Adam and Eve. As you probably recall from biology, people have different skin colors mainly because their melanocytes produce different amount and kinds of melanin. The genetic mechanism behind human skin color is mainly regulated by the enzyme tyrosinase, which creates the color of the skin, eyes, hair shades and type.

As one of my black pastor friends says,
“And God doesn’t love me any more than you just because he gave me more of this enzyme!”

Racial prejudice is a sign of complete ignorance.

When we demonstrate prejudice, we show everyone around us that we don’t know what we’re talking about. We’re revealing how foolish we really are.

God’s Word says,

“Anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them” (1 John 2:11).

God plainly states that if I hate someone just because that person is different, I’m in the dark - and blind. That’s a very serious accusation from God, and we need to take it to heart.

Racial prejudice disobeys God’s Great Commandment.

“Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” (Matthew 22:37-39, NLT)

“Paul says,“The entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other””(Galatians 5:14-15 NIV).

If you display a racist attitude, you’re disobeying the plain truth of God’s Word. We can’t make pre-judgments about another person based on outward appearance and truly love him or her as a brother or sister.

Racial prejudice is a very serious sin.

Prejudice breaks God’s heart. The Bible says,

“If you treat people according to their outward appearance, you are guilty of sin, and the Law condemns you as a lawbreaker” (James 2:9 TEV).

Racism is a problem of sin, not skin. One day we’ll give an account for the sin of prejudice before God.

“For we must all stand before Christ to be judged. We will each receive whatever we deserve for the good or evil we have done in this earthly body.” (2 Corinthians 5:10, NLT)

The important thing to remember as we search our hearts for racism, prejudice or bigotry is that,

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9 NIV).

We will only eliminate prejudice as each one of our hearts is transformed deeply by the love of God.

The Good News is our God is willing and able to change us - if we will let Him.
