A little hunchback boy in Sunday school had memorized some Bible verses along with all the other kids in his class. One Sunday evening he was to come up to the front and recite the verses and then walk off the stage. One cruel youngster, seeing the hunchback boy stumbling onto the stage, yelled out, “Hey, cripple, why don’t you get the pack off your back?” You could have heard a pin drop as this little boy stopped and just dissolved in tears.

All of a sudden, a man got up and walked down the aisle and came and stood by the boy and put his arm around him. He said, “I don’t know what kind of person would say something like that, but I just want to say that the most courageous person in this room today is this little boy. You see, he’s my son and I’m proud of him.” With that he reached down and picked up his son and carried him back to the seat.

And I thought as I read that account, that is exactly what God does for us. In the bruised, hunchback, broken fashion of our lives we do our best, and then we stumble and make a mess of things from time to time. The Lord Jesus says, “Oh, you’re Mine. I’m proud of you. I love you.”

“And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow - not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below - indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39, NLT)
